Democracy in Action!

This week Warsop Parish Council had the pleasure of welcoming Birklands and Sherwood Schools to the Council Chambers.

Local pupils recently took over the Council Chamber for our first round of school debate sessions, and they certainly had plenty to say!

Each visit began with Cllr Nadine McGuinness opening the meeting before the children elected their own Chair and got down to the serious business of debating. They also had the chance to try on the civic regalia, explore the historic names on the Roll of Honour and, of course, have a go at calling “Order!” with the gavel!

The sessions gave pupils the opportunity to discuss local issues, learn more about democracy and discover how decisions are made. They also played an important role in a consultation linked to the East Midlands Mayor’s Community Development Funding, sharing their ideas for a potential new park at Swallows Green.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part. The children were impeccably behaved, enthusiastic and full of fantastic ideas, with everyone getting involved and sharing their thoughts.

We’ll be welcoming more schools from across the parish for the next round of debates in the autumn, and we can’t wait to hear what they have to say!
