Father of 3 left in coma after catching flu
Aaron Clark, a 42-year-old father of three from Sutton-in-Ashfield, is urging others to get the flu vaccine after nearly dying from the virus last December.

Previously fit and healthy with no underlying conditions, Aaron quickly deteriorated after developing flu symptoms and was rushed to King’s Mill Hospital, where he was placed in an induced coma for 16 days. He suffered multi-organ failure, required ventilation to breathe, and needed dialysis due to kidney failure. Doctors described him as critically ill and uncertain he would survive.
After a long and ongoing recovery, Aaron has reflected on how unprepared he was for the severity of flu, admitting he hadn’t visited his GP in years and had never received a flu vaccine. Now committed to getting vaccinated, he and his partner recently returned to the hospital to thank the ICU team, presenting them with paintings as a gesture of gratitude.
Healthcare professionals involved in his care are using his story to highlight the dangers of flu and the importance of vaccination, particularly for vulnerable groups. The NHS offers free flu vaccines to eligible individuals, and urges the public to take flu seriously to avoid preventable illness and strain on healthcare services.
